Charlotte Pride condemns the U.S. Supreme Court decision today overturning Roe v. Wade and, with it, nearly five decades of precedent protecting the right of bodily autonomy and ending the constitutional right to abortion.
Our hearts break on this dark day in our country’s history and we mourn with the millions of people who are further relegated into a continued second-class citizenship. In more than half of states, abortion rights are expected to be banned and will be severely restricted in many more. Our inherent right to bodily autonomy should not depend on where we live.
In the spirit of Stonewall and the LGBTQ Liberation Movement, Charlotte Pride intimately understands the essential importance of the right of individuals to determine their own reproductive, sexual, and healthcare decisions.
Make no mistake: If this Court can overturn a longstanding precedent on a right like abortion, it will find a way to overturn other landmark precedents, including cases which de-criminalized same-sex sexual relationships and recognized marriage rights.
Charlotte Pride understands the far-reaching impacts and ramifications of this decision on our community. We ask everyone in our community and those who love, support, and affirm us to stand with each other, check in with your friends and neighbors, and continue your efforts to make your voices heard, empower marginalized people, and make our world a better place.
